The War Machines
The TARDIS lands in London,
in 1966. The Doctor senses a strange energy nearby and visits the newly
completed Post Office Tower. He and Dodo meet Professor Brett, creator of WOTAN
(Will Operating Thought ANalogue), a computer that thinks for itself. In four
days, on C-Day, WOTAN will be linked with computers all over the world. Dodo
and Polly, Brett's secretary, go to Inferno, a local nightclub and meet Ben
Jackson while the Doctor attends a meeting about WOTAN, lead by Sir Charles
Summer.

Before
Brett goes to the meeting, he's hypnotised by WOTAN. He then gets Krimpton, an
electronics expert, from the meeting and takes him to be hypnotised by WOTAN,
as is Major Green, the chief of security for the Post Office Tower. WOTAN sends
a control signal to Dodo over the telephone. She goes to WOTAN and it tells her
"Doctor Who is required, bring him here", (The first instance of the
Doctor being referred to by that name). WOTAN intends to take over the world
with an army of War Machines. Using hypnosis WOTAN orders workers to build 12
War Machines around London. One is close to the Inferno club.
Dodo,
the Doctor, Ben and Polly leave for Sir Charles' house. A tramp near the
nightclub, looking for a place to sleep, discovers Machine 3 and is killed. The
next day, Dodo gets the Doctor to call Brett and he is almost hypnotised by
WOTAN. Dodo, thinking the Doctor is now hypnotised; she says that the War
Machines are in strategic points across London. The Doctor frees her and sends
her to the country to recover. When Polly disappears, the Doctor sends Ben to
look for around the club, after reading about the tramp being found dead there.
Ben finds the War Machine nearby; he's captured and put to work as a slave
labourer. He learns that the War Machines are going to attack at noon the next
day. He escapes but Polly doesn't try to stop him; so she's sent to be punished
by WOTAN. Sir Charles has the army attack the War Machine near the club but
their weapons are somehow disabled and they retreat.
The Doctor stands in front of
the Machine and it stops; it hasn't been completely programmed. Once the
Machine is deactivated, the workmen and Major Green are no longer hypnotised.
By studying the Machine, the Doctor learns about the other machines and when
they're going to attack. Then they get a report of another War Machine going
haywire while it's being tested. The army helps the Doctor to trap the Machine
and reprogram it to destroy WOTAN. Ben gets to the tower ahead of the Machine
and rescues Polly before it comes in and immobilizes WOTAN. Krimpton is killed
in the ensuing battle and WOTAN is destroyed before it can order the other War
Machines to attack all of London. As a result, Brett and all the others who
were hypnotised return to normal. Ben and Polly tell the Doctor that Dodo has
decided to stay. He thanks them and enters the TARDIS. Ben and Polly follow
him, intent on returning Dodo's key and the Doctor promptly whisks them away!
