The War Machines

The TARDIS lands in London, in 1966. The Doctor senses a strange energy nearby and visits the newly completed Post Office Tower. He and Dodo meet Professor Brett, creator of WOTAN (Will Operating Thought ANalogue), a computer that thinks for itself. In four days, on C-Day, WOTAN will be linked with computers all over the world. Dodo and Polly, Brett's secretary, go to Inferno, a local nightclub and meet Ben Jackson while the Doctor attends a meeting about WOTAN, lead by Sir Charles Summer.

Before Brett goes to the meeting, he's hypnotised by WOTAN. He then gets Krimpton, an electronics expert, from the meeting and takes him to be hypnotised by WOTAN, as is Major Green, the chief of security for the Post Office Tower. WOTAN sends a control signal to Dodo over the telephone. She goes to WOTAN and it tells her "Doctor Who is required, bring him here", (The first instance of the Doctor being referred to by that name). WOTAN intends to take over the world with an army of War Machines. Using hypnosis WOTAN orders workers to build 12 War Machines around London. One is close to the Inferno club.

Dodo, the Doctor, Ben and Polly leave for Sir Charles' house. A tramp near the nightclub, looking for a place to sleep, discovers Machine 3 and is killed. The next day, Dodo gets the Doctor to call Brett and he is almost hypnotised by WOTAN. Dodo, thinking the Doctor is now hypnotised; she says that the War Machines are in strategic points across London. The Doctor frees her and sends her to the country to recover. When Polly disappears, the Doctor sends Ben to look for around the club, after reading about the tramp being found dead there. Ben finds the War Machine nearby; he's captured and put to work as a slave labourer. He learns that the War Machines are going to attack at noon the next day. He escapes but Polly doesn't try to stop him; so she's sent to be punished by WOTAN. Sir Charles has the army attack the War Machine near the club but their weapons are somehow disabled and they retreat.

The Doctor stands in front of the Machine and it stops; it hasn't been completely programmed. Once the Machine is deactivated, the workmen and Major Green are no longer hypnotised. By studying the Machine, the Doctor learns about the other machines and when they're going to attack. Then they get a report of another War Machine going haywire while it's being tested. The army helps the Doctor to trap the Machine and reprogram it to destroy WOTAN. Ben gets to the tower ahead of the Machine and rescues Polly before it comes in and immobilizes WOTAN. Krimpton is killed in the ensuing battle and WOTAN is destroyed before it can order the other War Machines to attack all of London. As a result, Brett and all the others who were hypnotised return to normal. Ben and Polly tell the Doctor that Dodo has decided to stay. He thanks them and enters the TARDIS. Ben and Polly follow him, intent on returning Dodo's key and the Doctor promptly whisks them away!

Drum machine

Drum machines are electronic musical instruments, which are designed to mimic or imitate the sound produced by natural drums and other percussion instruments. These instruments are very useful for an array of musical genres. Additionally, these instruments are a necessity whenever session percussionists or drummers are not desired or available.

Originally, drum machines were referred to as rhythm machines. During the years 1930-1932, Lйon Theremin made an innovative and complex Rhythmicon. This creation was due to orders made by Henry Cowell, who wanted a musical instrument with the capability to play compositions with multiple rhythmic patterns and based on overtone series that were far too difficult to perform on keyboard instruments present in those times. Theremin's invention created 16 distinct rhythms, which were all associated to a specific pitch. This invention was introduced to the public in 1932 and was later set aside by Henry Cowell and was almost forgotten for several decades. Harry Chamberlin, a Californian inventor, created a tape loop based drum machine which is known as the Chamberlin Rhythmate. This type of drum machine has a sliding head that permitted a playback and blending of each track included in the 14 tape loops confined in the instrument. All of these 14 tape loops are of true acoustic jazz drum gears that play different beating styles. The Chamberlin Rhythmate also contained a speed, pitch, and volume controller, as well as a separate amplifier with trebleё bass control plus an input jack for a microphone, a guitar, and other musical instruments. Subsequently, the Rudolph Wurlitzer Company, more commonly known as Wurlitzer, released the Sideman, which is an electro-mechanical drum machine and was regarded as the first commercially-produced drum machine. This instrument was created for the purpose of accompanying the company's organ range. Additionally, the Sideman provided a choice of 12 predefined and electronically generated rhythmic patters having variable tempos. The sound source of this instrument is a set of vacuum tubes that creates 10 electronic drum sounds, which are sequenced by a series of rotating discs with steel contacts on its edges. The tempo of the rhythmic patterns produced by this instrument was controlled by a slider, which increased the speed of rotation of the discs. Generally, the Sideman was enclosed in a wooden cabinet that contained an amplifier, a speaker, and sound generating circuitry.

In 1964, the first successful drum machine was created. It was developed and produced by Ace Tone, presently known as Roland Corporation. This successful drum machine was called the Rhythm Ace or R1. This instrument produces musical sound when the musician presses the buttons included in the machine. After the release of this instrument, other specific drum machines were developed and released that lead to modern day drum machines.

During the year 2000, drum machines became much less familiar. These instruments became partly supplanted by general-purpose hardware samplers. However, traditional drum machines are still being made by companies such as Roland Corporation, Zoom, Korg, and Alesis.

Most contemporary drum machines are sequencers with a sample playback or synthesiser component that specialises in the reproduction of drum timbres and the sound of other percussion instruments. Though the features of modern drum machines vary from model to model, all of them can produce unique sounds and enable the player to compose exceptional drum beats.
